Issue 272: Precise Flight
Jetstar rolls out RNP
Jetstar is in the process of rolling out Required Navigation Performance (RNP) technology on its A320 fleet in a bid to increase aircraft efficiency, safety and the reliability of its services, particularly at some of the more challenging airports in serves
The technology, which relies upon GPS based technology to increase the precision of navigation. Specifically, it enables aircraft to fly between two three-dimensionally defined points of airspace. This greater level of precision can allow aircraft to fly more direct routes while avoiding obstacles such as high terrain, as well as in some cases being able to use lower minimas for landing at some airports where instrument landing systems (ILS) are not available.
