Inside the Archive #20 | MRH-90 Taipan
It’s safe to say that no helicopter in recent history has gained as much infamy here in Australia as the MRH-90 Taipan. Brought into service in 2007 to replace older S-70A-9 Black Hawk and Westland Sea King helicopters in the Australian Army and Royal Australian Navy, the Taipan was Australia’s version of the NHI Industries NH90 multirole helicopter, and was intended to serve until 2037.
Defence ordered 47 Taipans, 40 of which went to the Army and six to the Navy, with the 47th serving as a spare and allowing one helicopter to be used as a ground training device. 42 of the aircraft were built by Australian Aerospace, with works at Townsville, Oakey, Nowra, and Holsworthy.
