Opinion: Your Air Uber driver will arrive in 6 years… maybe
It was en route to the Rotortech conference on the Gold Coast this month that I got to talking with my rideshare driver (hello if you’re reading this, Giuseppe) about a major announcement trumpeted by Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate a few days earlier: a deal signed with advanced air mobility (AAM) firm Skyports to explore building “vertiports” for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft across the city in the lead-up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
Skyports, which is already planning to have air taxis up and running by the end of this year in (goodness me, where else) Dubai, says what is currently a 45-minute drive from Gold Coast Airport to Broadbeach could be reduced to just five to seven minutes in an air taxi – an idea that Tate is bang alongside, even if Giuseppe wasn’t quite convinced.
