Issue #398: Greg Foran survived the ultimate aviation deep end
COVID-19 was undoubtedly the toughest crisis to have hit aviation in the sector’s history. In Australia, Qantas was forced to make thousands of its staff redundant, cancel all international flights for almost two years and push back its plans to launch Project Sunrise. Virgin Australia fared even worse, sliding into administration before emerging with a significantly slimmed-down fleet. Rex, which had appeared to emerge unscathed, eventually succumbed after its pandemic plan to buy cheap 737s failed.
In many ways, though, the person who had it toughest was Greg Foran. The former Walmart boss was only just getting his feet under the table as the chief executive of Air New Zealand when the pandemic struck. Worse still, despite being lauded for his retail management skills, he went into the crisis with no aviation experience whatsoever. And while all countries handled COVID-19 differently, New Zealand’s approach was world famous after it led the way in shutting its international borders and enforcing China-style hard lockdowns.
