The project is investigating how low-cost optical sensor networks can detect and track drones, and aims to reduce potential aerial threats to Australia’s Defence personnel, infrastructure and critical assets.

The investment is being made under the $180.6 million Sovereign Industry Development Fund. US-based Landlocked Aviation’s new facility is expected to create more than 750 new jobs in operation and construction in the Toowoomba region, with completion due in early 2028.

The initiative is reportedly being led by Army’s 5th/7th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, as a trial alongside other additional capabilities such as reconnaissance drones and unmanned ground vehicles.

Delivered by 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, the three-week FPV uncrewed aerial system course provides already qualified drone operators additional training on emerging UAS platforms and the skills required to operate, maintain, and integrate them into military operations.

The company is seeking to raise $40 million by issuing 80,000,000 new shares at an offer price of $0.50 per share, implying an indicative pro forma market capitalisation of approximately $158 million upon completion of the offer.
