American Airlines and US Airways have formally agreed to merge the two companies, creating the United States’ – and the world’s – largest airline.

Size matters

The combined entity, which will trade as American Airlines, will boast a fleet of more than 1,500 aircraft and receive a further 600 over the next four years. The new American Airlines will carry 187 million passengers a year on its combined fleet supported by a workforce of around 115,000.
