Trials are underway for Perth Airport’s new P1 transport hub as it nears completion.

P1, which will replace the “outgrown forecourt road” in use since 1986, includes more than 1,700 parking bays as well as passenger pick-up and drop-off, taxis, rideshare services, and accessible parking. The current trials will determine a time frame for the official opening.

When opened, P1 will house all pick-up and drop-off activity for Terminal 1, adding 70 per cent more pick-up and drop-off bays than the current precinct.

“P1 is a major investment in the customer journey and an important step in Perth Airport’s long-term vision for aviation in Western Australia. It will deliver immediate benefits for customers and provide an early look at the airport experience we are creating,” said Perth Airport chief commercial and aviation officer Kate Holsgrove.

“Customers will immediately notice the improved pick-up and drop-off experience. More parking spaces and improved ground transport facilities will make journeys easier for travellers and visitors.

“We’re also proud to have partnered with Western Australian artists to create both the façade artwork for the new P1 transport hub and the forecourt sculpture.

“These pieces provide a strong sense of place, helping to showcase Western Australia’s identity and creativity from the moment visitors arrive at Perth Airport.”

In a press release, Perth Airport said the existing Express pick-up and drop-off area outside Terminal 2 will remain available.

“Taxi and rideshare pick-ups for Terminal 2 will move to the P1 Ground Level, creating a consolidated transport hub for both terminals,” it said.

“The opening of P1 and closure of the current Terminal 1 pick-up and drop-off lane will enable the next stage of works across the precinct, including landscaping and final finishing works that could not be undertaken while the existing forecourt remained operational.”

The new transport hub is part of Perth Airport’s multibillion-dollar “One Airport” overhaul, which will consolidate all passenger operations into the Airport Central precinct.

Last month, the airport revealed designs for its new 159,000-square-metre terminal, which will be nearly three times the size of the existing Terminals 3 and 4, and 25 per cent larger than the combined footprint of Terminals 1 and 2 while delivering 22 new contact gates.

Perth Airport saw a record 18.4 million passengers in FY2025–26, including 5.55 million international travellers, with total passengers expected to top 30.8 million – and international passengers to reach 11.4 million – by FY45–46.
