Issue 106: May 1995
Excellent
Avalon Airshows Downunder Avalon 95 was a significant success in more ways than one. If you were a spectator then it had plenty to offer with mostly reasonable weather albeit on the windy side during the trade days, and a number of interesting visitors to make the show something totally different by traditional Australian standards. On this count our thanks again go to the Russians who since the late eighties have been literally ‘saving’ every major international show from death by boredom by the presence of their interesting and exciting aircraft. Let’s face it, it’s pretty hard to top the performance of the Sukhoi Flanker though its smaller stablemate, the little Su-29 tries hard to do just that.
Avalon
However, the victory for Avalon goes far beyond aircraft and pilots performing their manoeuvres high above the general public. The show is really about commerce, the very lifeblood of aviation yesterday, today and tomorrow. And in this regard Avalon 95 was an immense success that from our point of view definitely marks a psychological turning point in the state of the international aerospace industry.
