The Australian airline scene continues to be dominated by two major operators, Ansett Australia and Qantas, with the last twelve months seeing no threat to these airlines from any new start-up carriers. Last year when writing our Directory it was expected that Air New Zealand would have by this time become a player on the Australian domestic scene but for reasons political and financial this has not taken place. Whether Ansett Australia with a mainly domestic fleet of 74 aircraft and Air New Zealand with a fleet of 33 aircraft of which 19 are international widebodies can come together only time will tell. Their combined fleet of 100 plus aircraft would be favourably balanced against that of the 91 jet aircraft presently operated by Qantas. Certainly it would give the South Pacific two very dominant airlines to compete in the Asian and world market.
Operators in our directory took delivery of 35 jet aircraft in the period under review. This compares very favourably with the 25 delivered in the previous twelve months. Deliveries were as follows — Boeing 747-400: Air New Zealand x 1; Boeing 747-300: Ansett Australia x 2; Boeing 767-300: Air New Zealand x 2; Air Pacific x 1; AWAS x 3; Qantas x 2; Boeing 767-200: Ansett Australia x 1; Polynesian x 1; Boeing 757-200: AWAS x 2; Boeing 737-300: Air Pacific/Royal Tongan x 1; Ansett Australia x 1; AWAS x 5; Australian air Express x 1; Boeing 737-200: Air New Zealand x 3; BAe 146-300: Airlink x 2; BAe 146-200: Airlink x 3; Fokker F28-4000: Air Niugini x 1; MDC DC-9-83: AWAS x 3 — Total 35. Overseas sales of aircraft totalled 11 as against 17 in the previous twelve months. Disposals were as follows — Boeing 767-300: Polynesian x 1; Boeing 767-200: Air Pacific x 1; Polynesian x 1; Air New Zealand x 1; Boeing 737-300: Polynesian x 1; Boeing 737-200: Air Nauru x 3; Air New Zealand x 3 — Total 11.
