The Raf Is To Upgrade All Of Its Jaguar Gr.1 Fleet With Avionics Originally Developed For The 12 Aircraft That Are Being Fitted With The Gec Marconi Thermal Imaging And Airborne Laser Designator (Tiald) System. The Remainder Of The Jaguar Fleet Will Be Fitted With A Simplified Development Of The Tiald Installation Package As Developed For The 12 Aircraft, Including New Hud, Gps, Improved Inertial Navigation System And A 1553b Databus. Upgraded Aircraft Will Be Designated Gr.1b (Single Seat) And T.2b (Two Seat). Further It Would Be An Easy Process Then To Upgrade The Gr.1b And T.2bs To Be Fitted With Tiald. The Original £2bn Contract To Modify The 12 Aircraft To Be Tiald Compatible Was Awarded In August 1994, And So Far Three Of These Aircraft Have Been Modified For Tiald. (Paul Merritt)

China Wants To Build Su-27
China is discussing local production of the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker fighter to follow the 26 examples already delivered from Russian production. Press reports indicate that Russia is not opposed to the idea but first wants to sell more complete Flankers to the Chinese. Negotiations for the purchase of a second batch have been delayed due to Russia wanting payment in hard currency. China wants to update its military generally and is believed to have already negotiated a licence to manufacture the SA-10 long range surface-to-air missile as well as receiving Kilo class conventional submarines from Russia. Large numbers of Su-27s in Chinese service could cause concern among neighbouring countries.
An-70 Crash Blamed On Human Error
The crash of the sole prototype Antonov An-70 transport after colliding with its An-72 chase aircraft has been blamed on human error, according to the commission of investigation into the accident. According to the commission’s report: “The careless action of both crews in their formation flying led to a collision and crash”, mutual aerodynamic forces resulting from the aircraft flying too close together leading to the aircraft being “sucked towards each other”.
