Qantas Mid Year Results
“An excellent result” is how Qantas Chairman Gary Pemberton described the airline’s half year financial figures announced on March 16, despite some pessimism in the financial market about the result, reports Julian Green. The 79.5% increase in pretax earnings saw a $71.7m improvement to $202.9m for the first half of the year, though the result has brought the airline well short of the $220m it had anticipated. Management was buoyed nonetheless by the $128.5m net profit, Mr Pemberton saying that the results were “exactly in line with expectations.” The release of the figures shows the third successive half year of an increase in profits. Revenue for the first half increased by 9.5% to $3.7bn.
The profit figure released was realised despite a 10% increase in the airline’s overall capacity, including a massive 24% increase in its domestic capacity with the increased utilisation of 767s on Australian routes. Load factors were not adversely affected by the increase in capacity, showing a minor decline to 72.8%. Meanwhile Qantas has claimed the lead in the overall domestic market, stealing Ansett’s long held position as the number one domestic carrier. Some 46% of the half yearly earning came from the domestic market, accounting for nearly half of the company’s profit. In an international and local market upturn, the airline’s yield for the reporting period increased to 10.8%, while across-the-board cost containment programmes and increased cashflow have reduced the airline’s debt by $411m.
