Time for a Change
There are a lot of things one can argue about in life though one thing that almost every person in aviation readily agrees with is the concept that the present Minister for Transport/Aviation has not been good news for our industry. Well, thankfully we live in a democracy which of course means that on March 2 you can exercise your democratic right and consign him to the dustbin of history. If you do, then rest assured that you will at least be replacing him with a man who is at least interested in the future wellbeing of aviation, at all levels, and indeed comes from a long-established aeronautical family background. Looking back upon the Brereton aviation era, with its constant agro and upheaval, and considering the policies and objectives of Senator Warwick Parer’s Coalition is like comparing chalk and cheese (refer interview on p26 Jan/Feb 96 AA).
It’s been a long, long time since our industry had a Minister that had a sincere interest and operating knowledge of the aviation portfolio. Kim Beazley fitted the bill nicely and to some extent so did Peter Morris (although his departmental bureaucrats mostly tended to overwhelm his arguments on behalf of industry) and Senator Bob Collins, although none have, particularly in the past half decade, actually done much to help let alone promote or foster aviation in this country.
