Melbourne teenager Amber Anderson has fulfilled a lifetime dream by passing her restricted private pilot's licence at the age of just 16. Amber began learning to fly from Moorabbin in a Piper Warrior when she was 15. As Casa regulations prohibit her from gaining her unrestricted Ppl until she turns 17, Amber hopes in the meantime to learn aerobatics or get a taildragger endorsement. Brigadier Steve Gower AM (retd) is the new head of the Australian War Memorial. Robin Southwell has been appointed to the newly created position of Group Chief Executive, British Aerospace Australia Holdings. Ansett Australia has appointed David Irvine as its Chief Financial Officer. Also at Ansett, Terry Saxby is the airline’s new country manager for Malaysia. Qantas’ Captain Bill Pike has been newly elected as president of the Australian International Pilots Association. Two key positions at CASA have been filled. Sue Leitch is in charge of the Airways Surveillance and Regulation, while Sue Ellen-Brickford is in charge of finance. William Fairbairn is the Regional Airlines Association of Australia’s newly appointed Executive Director, replacing Bob Mason. Peter Wynch is Canberra Airport’s new General Manager. Vale — John Read, editor of Pacific Ultralights Monthly and a well known identity in the ultralight fraternity, and his wife were killed in a light aircraft crash in Queensland in December. Hazelton Airlines has announced a pre tax profit of $1.05m for the six months to December 31 1995, a $2.7m turnaround on the first six months of 1995. Revenue of $26.9m was up 6.7% on the same period in 1994/95.

This video is one of a series that takes an indepth look at the flightdeck operations of major airliners. This particular film studies the operations of the three crew cockpit of a Virgin Atlantic 747-200 ‘Classic’. This video is an interesting, if somewhat technical look at the Classic’s cockpit operations. It involves a Virgin service from Gatwick to Miami and return, during which the crew, led by the captain, explain the aircraft’s various features and procedures. Topics covered include a close look at the flight engineer’s panel, plus inertial navigation, Selcal, TCAS and others. Boeing 747-200 Classic is produced to television production standards and should prove to be of interest to pilots and aspiring pilots in particular.
