New Robinsons Nearing Certification
Robinson should have received US certification for its new R22 Beta II and Mariner II models by the time these words are read. The new R22s are powered by derated 131hp (98kW) Textron Lycoming O-360s (as opposed to 131hp/98kW O-320s), boosting performance, particularly at altitude. Other changes include a new throttle governor, carb heat assist, a high capacity oil cooler and improved carburetor air temp gauge and probe. R22 Beta II performance highlights include an In Ground Effect (IGE) hover ceiling at 622kg (1370lb) of over 900ft, a 1000ft/min rate of climb from sea level and over 600ft/min rate from 10,000ft.
Agusta, Rockwell & Asta Sign Air 87 Agreement
Agusta, Rockwell Australia and ASTA Defence signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on January 9 covering joint collaboration to meet the requirements of the Army’s AIR 87 project. AIR 87 seeks to acquire armed reconnaissance/fire support helicopters and a fixed wing broad area surveillance platform. Under the MOA, Agusta (who manufactures the A 129 Mangusta and the A 109) would be prime contractor for any bid, with Rockwell Australia and its new Australian subsidiary ASTA Defence as associate prime contractor. AIR 87 is currently in the project definition stage, but eventually will seek to acquire as many as 40 new helicopters.
