The NZ Ministry of Defence has shortlisted the Westland Super Lynx and Kaman SH-2G SeaSprite to meet its requirement for a naval helicopter to operate off the Anzac and Leander frigates and to replace Wasps. The shortlisting rules out the Sikorsky S-76N and the Eurocopter Panther, which, says the MoD, were eliminated because they did not meet operational and technical requirements, while the Seasprite and Lynx are purpose designed for operations from naval vessels. The elimination of the Panther on technical grounds also sidesteps the controversy surrounding France’s nuclear testing in the Pacific, as in mid last year the New Zealand Government suspended all military contacts with France in protest. Kaman and Westland are being invited to make a best and final offer, with a decision due in April and entry into service scheduled for 1997.
