Part of Britain’s ‘Imperial Gift’ to Australia of 128 surplus WWI aircraft in 1920 were 28 de Havilland DH.9 and 30 DH.9A (pictured) day bombers— the RAAF’s first bombers. The DH.9As were given the A1 numbering prefix, the DH.9s A6. Roles included army co-operation, survey and mapping, reconnaissance and training. (Defence PR)

The Royal Australian Air Force Celebrates 75 Years of Proud Service

The Royal Australian Air Force is 75 years old this month, one of the oldest independent air arms in the world. To help mark this important occasion, Stewart Wilson presents a potted history of the RAAF: its origins, its battles, its political background and above all its service to Australia over the years through the professionalism, dedication and valour of those who have worn the blue uniform.

It was the Commonwealth Gazette No 28 of Thursday, March 31 1921, which formally announced the formation of one of the oldest independent air forces in the world, just three years younger than Britain’s Royal Air Force and more than a quarter of century older than the United States Air Force, which didn’t gain complete independence from the US Army until after World War II.
