Sir Tim Wallis In New Zealand Spitfire Accident
An accident that saw his Spitfire Mk.XIV ‘NH799’, ZK-XIV, very badly damaged and putting leading New Zealand Warbird owner and pilot in hospital with serious injuries must make one ask if Sir Tim can afford to continue flying Spitfires. The accident occurred at Wanaka aerodrome, in the South Island, on Tuesday January 2, just after take-off. While fine details of the accident are as yet unknown it is understood that the accident happened at 11:50am with the aircraft coming down in a farm paddock near the airport. The aircraft’s starboard wing tore off and came to rest inverted. Shocked onlookers rushed to the scene and turned the Spitfire over enough in order to extricate Sir Tim from the machine. He was rushed by air to hospital in Dunedin where it was announced that while his injuries were serious they were not life threatening. This latest accident is the third that Sir Tim has had in Spitfires. The first was a gear up landing following a fuel problem in a Spitfire that had just been rebuilt. The second was a ground loop when a Spit he was flying was landed in a stiff crosswind. Sir Tim also suffers a leg problem as a result of an accident in a helicopter some years ago. Sir Tim’s Alpine Fighter Collection recently acquired a third Spitfire fighter, due to be delivered this year following restoration in the UK.
