A Long Walk to the Aisle
Three years ago in this column we wrote about the many benefits that would ensue from a partial merging of Ansett Australia and Air New Zealand. The courtship of these two eager suitors has been tortuous in every sense of the word and is something that has now taken on the proportions of a biblical epic.
The plan was originally for Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited to sell its 50% stake in Ansett Australia to Air New Zealand. This later changed when a redirection of corporate philosophy within TNT led to that company offering ANZ its 50% Ansett shareholding in place of the original News offer.
