GE & Pratts Team On 747 Stretch Engine

Usually intense rivals, US engine builders General Electric and Pratt & Whitney have signed an agreement to jointly develop a new turbofan engine for Boeing’s planned 747 stretches, the 747-500X and 747-600X. The agreement covers the development of a new turbofan in the 72,000 to 84,000 lb (323 to 376 kN) thrust range which would provide weight, fuel burn, noise and operating cost benefits over currently available engines planned for the growth 747s. The new engine would be developed by a new joint venture company owned equally by P&W and GE. The two companies will have sole management control over the new joint venture, although additional partners on the engine will be considered. The new engine will be in competition with developments of the existing Rolls-Royce Trent for growth 747 orders.

Skywest Aviation For Sale

One of Australia’s largest general aviation companies, Skywest Aviation, has been offered for sale by owner Ansett. The WA-based organisation is a major supplier of contract charter and other services to government and the resources industry including until this year the Coastwatch service. Skywest Aviation also has extensive aircraft maintenance and modification facilities. Ansett is disposing of the company as part of its general concentration on its core airline business. Other Ansett subsidiaries which have been sold in recent times include bus and coach builder Ansair, transport and storage company Ansett-Ridgeways and general aviation firm Pacific Aviation. Ansett-owned Skywest Airlines is separate from the GA company and is not for sale.
