Sia Takes First High Gross Weight A340-300e, Gerard Frawley

Singapore Airlines, the largest customer for the A340 so far and the launch customer for the higher gross weight version, took delivery of its first two A340-300Es on April 25.

The two A340s were the first of 17 Singapore Airlines has on firm order, with an additional 20 on option. Six will be in Singapore Airlines service by the end of this year with the final aircraft on firm order to be delivered in 2002. SIA first ordered seven A340s with 13 options in August 1991. The order was extended to the current 17 firm and 20 options in December 1994, making SIA the largest single A340 customer and Airbus’ biggest customer in Asia Pacific.

The significance of this first delivery over previous A340 deliveries is the added capability the improvements of the higher gross weight A340-300E brings to Singapore Airlines. The max takeoff weight of the A340-300E is 271 tonnes, up from the basic A340-300’s 257 tonnes. This greater max takeoff weight translates into an increased range of 7100nm (13,155km), compared with 6650nm (12,300km) for the basic A340-300. The increased weight also, claims Airbus, gives the A340-300E the greatest cargo capacity of any passenger aircraft with max passengers and baggage.
