Aviation Industry Rejects Airservices’ Budget

The recent walkout by the aviation industry representatives marked a new low in the industry’s working relationship with a government regulatory body.

At the consultative meeting of April 11, the Australian Aviation Industry Association (AAIA) totally rejected the increased charges proposed by AirServices Australia (ASA), arguing that “no increase in AirServices’ operating costs, and therefore charges, could be justified.”

Captain David Wiltshire, Chairman of the very representative AAIA, said that “the only responsible way forward is for AirServices to revise its proposed costs and charges and resume the consultative process”. He further argued that “the cost savings referred to (in the AirServices’ meeting papers) are readily available if the proper and necessary decisions are taken with respect to such matters as airspace design and implementation, services to General Aviation, service levels, staffing levels and productivity.”
