Freedom Air Launches

Air New Zealand wholly owned Mount Cook Group’s newly established charter airline, Freedom Air International, launched services between Australia and New Zealand on December 8. Freedom Air is initially offering twice weekly charters between Sydney and Auckland and weekly charters between Sydney/Christchurch, Sydney/Hamilton, Sydney/Wellington and Brisbane/Hamilton, which are operated by a Boeing 757-200ER leased from UK charter operator Britannia Airways.

The 757 is configured with 235 economy class seats and will initially be crewed by Britannia pilots and cabin crew. The new carrier is styling itself as a fun and low cost operator, with cheap fares and a basic level of inflight service. According to Freedom Air’s General Manager Ric Macgillicuddy, “We want to cater for people who may have previously found overseas travel beyond their means, those who don’t want to pay for the trappings of a scheduled service and those with the flexibility to fit in with charter requirements.”
