'Pacific Lightning' by Matthew Waki is one of a number of spectacular WW2 prints available from Adelaide based Aerodrome Gallery. The print features the Lockheed P-38L Lightning of Major Thomas B McGuire in late November 1944. Major McGuire was America's second highest scoring fighter ace of all time. Warbirds
Another Strikemaster Back in the Air
British made jet warbirds seem to be the flavour of the month in Australia of late with the news that former Royal New Zealand Air Force BAC 167 Mk.88 Strikemaster, VH-LLD, ex RNZAF NZ6372, took to the air at Bendigo, Victoria, on Saturday September 5 following overhaul work by former RAAF engineer Ray Goulding and his Bendigo based aircraft maintenance firm, Goulding Airmotive.
Owned by Dr John Pierce of Watchem Vic, VH-LLD was registered on November 22 1994. Test pilot for the first civil flight of the Strikemaster was Flt Lt Mark Scott accompanied by a smiling Ray Goulding. Mark was the test pilot of Tasmanian Jet Provost, VH-JPP, back on June 3 this year at Devonport.
The first flight was made without any hitches and subsequent flights have since been made that have endorsed Group Captain Alan Page of Melbourne on the type. The Strikemaster was displayed in the air at the early November Hopetoun Air Sports gathering in Northern Victoria. With VH-LLD in the air there are now four Jet Provosts/Strikemasters flying in this country. These aircraft are VH-LLD at Bendigo, Jet Provost VH-JPP at Devonport, Strikemaster Mk.84 VH-AKY at Sydney and Strikemaster Mk.88 VH-AGI in Western Australia. With the Tasmanian Air Races only a few months away there is increased likelihood of a jet race event taking place at that meet!
