Avalon For Sale
The Federal Government has advertised the sale of Victoria’s Avalon Airport along with resident aircraft maintenance organisation, ASTA Aircraft Services (ASTAAS). The advertisement invites expressions of interest in the airfield, and while the Government would prefer to sell the whole facility as a single unit, the possibility of selling the airport and ASTAAS separately remains open. A buyer capable of maintaining and developing both the airport and ASTAAS is considered ideal.
Australia’s Aerospace Industry In The Balance
Chairman of Airport Industries Australia, Mr Hans Roser, has made representations to Government seeking assurances that the planned privatisation of the FAC’s 22 airports will not adversely affect the Association’s members. Julian Green reports that the representations seek to alert the Government to the potentially negative impacts on local industry if investors were to ignore the expertise and wide range of capabilities of AIA members. Without such assurances, the prospects for the local industry’s 16,815 employees, and the $1943 million combined turnover of AIA’s members, would look less secure. While there has been no firm outcome from the depositions, Hans Roser says that they have “received a favourable reception.” With the passing of legislation allowing privatisation to progress now delayed until the end of 1996 at the earliest, pressure will be maintained by the AIA consortium to support local enterprise in future airport developments. The group will also open discussions with potential airport operators to promote the capabilities and proven track record of Australian industry. Members of the AIA, an association of leading Australian aerospace organisations, are currently pursuing six major airport projects overseas with a potential capital value of $800 million, and are selling goods and services in the order of $250 million annually.
