After Hours – Aviating the Internet
Aviating the Internet
Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave for the last three years, you won’t have missed the latest phenomenon sweeping the world – Internet.
As is often the case when computers are involved, many people have put their hands up, surrendered and said “I don’t want to know about it”. Reliable information on the subject hasn’t been easy to come by either. We often see and hear terms like the “information superhighway” and “cyberspace”. When Telstra recently completed the laying of a telephone cable from mainland Australia to Tasmania, local media reported that sleepy Boat Harbour had suddenly been connected to the information superhighway. Really? The reality is that Internet is not just for computer boffins. It can be equally enjoyable and informative for people in all walks of life. Aviation hasn’t been left behind either. Internet is being used by people with all sorts of aviation interests – from people like me who are just fanatical about airliners and the companies that fly them, to student and qualified pilots, to air traffic controllers, to aviation authority and airline employees and anyone else with some form of connection with aviation. This article explores what the Internet is all about, how you can get connected and the sorts of aviation related things you can expect to see. I have deliberately tried to keep it as nontechnical as possible – unfortunately it does require some initial discussion on computer issues.
