Expensive Haste!
A Light Aircraft Owner Tells How He Found Out To His Cost That Being In A Hurry Doesn’t Always Save Time!
Having learned to fly at the country aero club in the same district as my property in South Australia (and for obvious reasons that’s all I’m saying about where this happened!), and gained my Unrestricted Private Licence after much unaccustomed study, I finally realised one of my lifetime ambitions by becoming the proud owner of my own aeroplane. My pride and joy was an elderly but sound enough, one previous owner Cessna 172. The fact that I was using it as farm transport (long distances and corrugated, dusty roads justify private flying in much of South Australia), and I could write off some of its operating expenses as a tax deduction, made its use even more pleasurable.
When its first 100 hourly inspection became due, I arranged to have it done at an authorised workshop in our biggish regional centre, about an hour’s flying time from home. It was a good little outfit, and although they only had a staff of three, they put through a fair amount of work from other private owners and a couple of agricultural operators. With a bit of planning on my part, going to this workshop, rather than flying the Cessna all the way to Parafield, I could get the 100 hourly all over and done with in the one day – or so I thought!
