Indonesian Industry Shakeup?
The Indonesian aerospace industry could be facing some radical pruning if current Research and Technology Minister, Jusef Habibie, retires next year as planned. A close friend of Indonesian President Suharto, Dr Habibie is also head of the state owned IPTN aircraft manufacturing company, spearhead of the minister’s ambitious plans to establish Indonesia as a major player on the world aerospace market. The company’s N-250 regional turboprop was scheduled to make its first flight as these words were written. Dr Habibie has come under strong criticism from economists and bankers for the amount of state aid he has been able to channel into IPTN, estimated at over $US1.6bn. Also questioned is the fact that Indonesia has bankrolled the N-250 project but export aircraft will be assembled at Mobile, Alabama in North America with most of its major components coming from outside Indonesia. The aircraft is also targeted at a sector of the market that has been fairly lifeless in recent years, something that is generally considered to be unlikely to change. Critics also point out that even though the Indonesian domestic market will require a large number of N-250 type airliners (force purchased by Government owned or backed airlines) each N-250, due to its high overseas content, will represent a significant burden on the country’s balance of payments even if locally destined aircraft are assembled in-country.
