On the Airbands

Dino DiFelice from Holland Park in Queensland writes to say he has purchased every issue of AA magazine since 1986 and truly believes that “we have the best aviation magazine around”. Dino uses a PRO- 2003 receiver, and a wire FM antenna about 1. 5 me- tres in length, and states “it is quite efficient”.

Recently Dino monitored Solomon 700, a leased Boeing 737-400 (from Qantas), talking to Qantas Brisbane on 131. 9 MHz. It was amusing, to say the least.

SOLOMON 700: “Qantas Brisbane, Solomon 700. ” QF BRISBANE: “Good afternoon Solomon 700, this is Qan- tas Brisbane, go ahead sir!” SOLOMON 700: “How are you dear sir? Blocks on the hour, nil sickness on board, registration is Hotel 4 Sierra Oscar Lima, we have eight crew disembarking and no special requirements. ” QF BRISBANE: “Copied that Solomon 700. It’s Bay I for you today!” SOLOMON 700: “Goodness, we ARE important aren’t we. Imagine. . . Bay 1! QF BRISBANE: “Don’t get too excited there, Bay 1 is the closest to the Qantas Domestic Terminal!” SOLOMON 700: “Oh dear me . . . just delusions of grandeur again!” QF BRISBANE: “See. . . you’re not THAT special after all!” Dino tells us it was great to hear two people, obviously professionals, enjoying their work.
