The Greening of the Airline Industry?
The noise and carbon soot that was generated by earlier generation jet airliners such as the 707 and DC-8 can no longer be accepted in the light of modern aerospace technologies.
The 1960s and early 1970s films depicting smoke trails of airliners struggling into the sky are all but relegated to cellu- loid in today’s mainstream air transportation industry.
The development of the Pratt & Whitney JT9D series and the General Electric CF6 high bypass engines in the late 1960s to power the new widebodied 747s, C-5s and DC-10s of the time changed the meaning of fuel efficient mass air transport. These new generation high bypass engines were introduced to airline service in 1969 and immediately reduced the cost per passenger kilometre by a third. The effectiveness of air transportation is undeniable and remains today as the most energy efficient form of long distance mass transportation available.
