Catalina Update

Further to the article in the March issue (p56) of Australian Aviation on the loss of the New Zealand bound Catalina, N5404J, further news is now to hand on the unfortunate demise of the amphibian.

The Catalina had departed from Hawaii bound for Tahiti and then New Zealand. When about 150km north of Kiritimati Island (formerly Christmas Island), the port engine failed. The propeller would not feather and loaded down with maximum fuel for the ferry flight it was not possible to keep the aircraft in the air. The pilot, American Kirk Broeder, was forced to put the machine down on the Pacific Ocean at night. Broeder could not see the ocean surface until the aircraft was actually in contact with it. Fortunately no one was injured in the emergency.
