Team Players

In a national emergency the nation’s Defence force is almost always called into action. After all, far more Australians have died this past century through the ravages of flood, fire and tempest than have been killed on mainland soil by enemy action.

The recent NSW bushfires highlighted the great value that a properly organised military can represent when local resources are already pressed to the hilt. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) reacted to the bushfire emergency with haste and professionalism, considering that many in the ADF were on leave. Still there were, as one would expect, instances where communication and control could have been improved. In the wake of the tragedy a comprehensive analysis by the NSW State Government should shed much light on both the positive and negative aspects of handling an emergency such as that which befell much of NSW, and in particular Sydney, last January.
