On the Airbands

An anonymous (name supplied) contributor who lives in South Australia, and who works as a charter pilot, supplied this beautiful story.

Our correspondent says some aviators are still coming to grips with the fact that some groundstations are using handheld transceivers that are capable of scanning numerous frequencies in the airband allocation.

An incident that set a couple of pilots back on their heels occurred some years ago at a remote inland location in South Australia. Two helicopters were inbound for a refuelling stop, calling the refueller on the discrete frequency to request fuel on arrival. The response came back in the form of the pleasant tones of a female voice.
