BAe's Jetstream division has released this artist's impression of the projected J51 and J71 airliners. Both aircraft feature the wing and fuselage (stretched for the J71 and shortened for the J51) of the current J61/ATP, while new features include uprated engines to place them in the 350kt (650kmlh) cruise class and a new tail. Jetstream is searching for a partner for the two aircraft, enabling it to both gain access to new funds and eliminate a potential market competitor. (Jetstream)

Boeing Gives Go Ahead With 737-X:
Boeing’s Board of Directors has officially authorised offering the new 737-X family of airliners which were first mooted in our May issue.
The new 737-X could be delivered to the first customers in 1997 if sufficient orders are received to officially launch the programme. While still in an early development stage, the 737-X will feature a modified wing with more area and greater fuel capacity, giving transcontinental US range, aerodynamic improvements to increase cruise speed to Mach . 78, crew and significant airframe parts commonality with the current 737 family, and new CFM56-3XS engines. The engines of 27,000lb thrust are designed to meet future noise standards significantly below Stage 3, as well as having lower fuel burn and emission levels and maintenance costs.
