Sixteen aircraft make up the New Allocations section this month, quite a small number compared with previous months with the trend continuing toward smaller, lighter machines and away from larger, corporate aircraft. The largest aircraft that appears is the third Beech C99 for Oxley Airlines, OXD, which joins OXB and OXC in their fleet. The only other commuter is Dash 8 TQN for Eastern Australian Airlines.

The Canadian built twin shares the fuselage cross section of the four engined Dash 7 and was specifically designed for the 30-40 seat commuter market. It first flew on June 20 1983 with deliveries starting the following year. The type was demonstrated in Australia, New Zealand and PNG during 1984 and orders were placed by Ansett, Norfolk Island Airlines, Newmans of New Zealand and Talair of PNG. Since then Talair has operated three machines, the first, on lease from Tyrolean Airways of Austria, was returned when the first of Talair’s aircraft were delivered in 1986. The other two have since joined the Flight West fleet in Australia. The two Newman’s aircraft are still active in New Zealand but now operate for Ansett after it took over Newmans during 1987.
