The Tristar undertakes its first mission in RAF service on July 5 1983

• The first RAF Lockheed TriStar 500 was placed into service on July 5 when 270 sol-diers were flown from RAF Brize Norton to Edmonton, Alberta. While four of the ex-British Airways TriStars are undergoing conversion to tanker configuration, two others are being used as transports pending their later modification. The RAF TriStars will eventually comprise four K Mk 1 tanker/ passenger transports and two K(C) Mk 1 tanker/freighters.

The USAF Electronic Systems Division took delivery of the first Boeing E-4B airborne command post at Boeing’s E-Systems plant at Greenville, Texas on July 15. The E-4B is the first of three E-4As to be upgraded as part of a contract worth $163m.
