A simple equation, learnt early in every aviator’s career states that:”Lift = Coefficient of Lift x ¼ x the density of the air mass x the Velocity squared x the surface area = Weight. ”

Three of the four variables are used to control an aircraft in flight; they are of course coefficient of lift (angle of attack), airspeed, and surface area in the form of flaps (depending on type). The fourth, the density of the airmass is for all intents and purposes a constant for a given point in time, but it is not always so, as this tale will tell!
