Concerns have been raised about the dangers of not providing traffic separation at airports such as Yulara (pictured) and Cooma, where traffic control would not occur below 10,000ft (or 5000ft In radar airspace).

Untangling the Airspace Alphabet

November Deadline Date Set for Introduction of New Airspace Structure

After some three years of investigation, consultation, and deliberation, the newAustralian Airspace Structure is finally to come into effect on November 11 this year.

To achieve this, a radar chain extending from Cairns around the eastern seaboard, plus Perth with its own radar, will provide secondary radar coverage down to 5000ft.

In that airspace IFR aircraft will be given IFR to IFR separation, and most importantly, as in the United States, a conflict merging target alert and traffic advisory service will be provided. However, as discussed later, all aircraft in that airspace will require to be transponder equipped otherwise they will not be seen.
