Defence businesses to be honoured at inaugural awards

written by Malavika Santhebennur | June 27, 2022

Australian Aviation is inviting all defence businesses to enter the first-ever Australian Aviation Awards in the Defence Business Support of the Year category.

The first-ever Australian Aviation Awards will take place on Thursday 1 September in Sydney with the support of principal partner the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

The Defence Business Support of the Year award is just one of 24 categories included in the nationwide awards program, which showcases the outstanding individuals and businesses that are positively shaping the growth and development of Australia’s aviation industry.

It offers leading professionals and their businesses the opportunity to highlight their achievements, gain exposure, and support the expansion of their careers and companies.

The awards program also seeks to build connectivity within the sector while providing the aviation industry with greater visibility, particularly as it emerges from the COVID-induced slowdown.

The Defence Support Business of the Year award is for businesses that have effectively capitalised on market opportunities and driven demonstrable growth while supporting the strengthening of Australia’s defence and air capability through participation in the industry.

The award is open to defence-related businesses contributing to air lift and combat capability such as satcom and telecommunications, manufacturing, combat systems, maintenance, transport, training, and all other air-related defence disciplines.

All defence businesses within these criteria are encouraged to participate irrespective of size, revenue, or geographic locations.

Submissions must outline an entrant’s product or service, distribution, customers, pricing, and approach to customer service, and detail the market potential for the business, system, or platform and a process for scaling or expanding it.

The submissions offer entrants the opportunity to highlight their major success, achievement, or milestone over the assessment period of between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021, and how the leadership of their business contributed to the outcome.

Entrants must also detail how their business has plans to improve its environmental impact for a sustainable future.

Alongside this, they must outline their unique selling points or competitive advantages and how that translates into market dominance or business potential, while also describing how their business will support increased jobs in the defence industry as well as ongoing upskilling for an Australian workforce.

We are urging businesses to demonstrate any innovation that has shaped their business (not limited to financial gains), detail how they have funded the business, and explain plans for future growth.

To bolster the quality of the submissions, award entrants can submit a maximum of four supporting documents including financial or business metrics, images, statistics, transcripts, media coverage, accolades, testimonials or recommendations/references, and any other relevant information.

In addition to the supporting documents, we also encourage entrants to submit an optional short video up to 30 seconds long answering the question: ‘What does business success mean to you?’

To be eligible for this award, the nominee must be an Australian business, organisation, or institution (or a division of a global business that is registered to trade in Australia) that has a focus on supporting the Australian defence supply chain and air capability.

The awards are peer-reviewed and judged by a well-regarded and trusted panel.

The Australian Aviation Awards includes a range of other individual and group awards for airlines, airports, support businesses, pilots, engineers, rotary businesses, industry associations, businesses that prioritise sustainability initiatives, and female aviation leaders.
