The service, flown with 232-seat A330-200 aircraft, will operate three times per week between 20 January and 18 February 2024 over the Chinese New Year period. It follows a previous trial route in January 2020, which was cancelled due to the onset of COVID-19.
The news will add competition for other carriers operating the route, including Qantas, which flies daily, and subsidiary Scoot.
The business made the announcement on the day its third 737 MAX, VH-8IB ‘Bronte Beach’, is set to arrive in Brisbane from the US.
The route, operated daily by 180-seat A320-200 aircraft, will commence in March 2024, complementing AirAsia X’s existing A330 service. Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia also offer connections between Perth and Kuala Lumpur.
Individually, Qantas saw an on-time departure rate of just 65.1 per cent in October according to BITRE data, compared to Jetstar at 66.4 per cent and Virgin at 68.9 per cent; however, QF designated services as a whole – which includes QantasLink – had on-time departures of 72.7 per cent.
Flight VJ89 from Ho Chi Minh City touched down in Perth just before 2:30pm on Tuesday aboard the A321neo VN-A646 before continuing to Adelaide at 3:51pm, arriving just before 9:30pm local time. The carrier will operate the return service five times per week.
