The ATBS is investigating an incident involving a Tiger Airways Airbus A320 at Melbourne airport on Tuesday night (June 7), which saw the aircraft descend below the minimum safe altitude on approach.
“An Airbus A320 aircraft, registered VH-VNG and operated by Tiger Airways Australia Pty Limited as flight TGW5207, was on approach into Melbourne, Victoria,” the ATSB website notes. “The aircraft was reported cleared by air traffic control (ATC) to descend to 2500ft but continued the descent to a reported 2000ft. The lowest safe altitude for that leg of the approach was 2500ft. ATC instructed the aircraft to climb back to 2500 ft. The investigation is continuing.”

Tiger has confirmed it reported the incident and is cooperating with the ATSB’s investigations.
The ATSB has categorised the incident as a “consequential event”.
