Inquiry Finds GA Safe but Problems Persist
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Transport, Communications and Infrastructure has published its long-awaited report on its inquiry into aviation safety in the commuter and general aviation sectors.
In the wake of the Monarch crash the Minister for Transport, Laurie Brereton, instructed the committee, led by Peter Morris, to examine the adequacy of air safety standards in the commuter and general aviation sectors in Australia, and compliance with, and supervision of, air safety standards in the commuter and general aviation sectors.
The Committee, after some 18 months and the taking of many written and oral submissions, has found that there is hard evidence to show a decline of safety in charter operations, but that there is no hard evidence to show a deterioration of aviation safety in the other sectors of GA, in GA as a whole or in low-capacity RPT operations. However, the Committee found that an unhealthy conflict relationship exists between the regulator and the regulated, and that the latter is in a continuing cut-throat fight for survival.
