Forty five aircraft make up the new allocation section this month including two classic designs from the de Havilland Aircraft Company, the Tiger Moth and Chipmunk. The latest de Havilland Canada Chipmunk to join the Australian register is BSR and comes from the Royal Navy via Sotheby’s auctions. That auction, on November 28 1994, offered for sale 40 UK military aircraft including two Andovers, two Canberras, two Harriers, 12 Hunters, two Sea Hawks, two Devons and single examples of Buccaneer, Gannet, Harvard, Spitfire, Tiger Moth, Jet Provost, Sea Vixen and Varsity. The highest bid was $820,000 for the rare PRXIX Spitfire whilst the Vickers Varsity was a steal at just $400.

Eight Chipmunks also went under the hammer and sold for between $18,000 and $22,000. All these machines had been in storage at RN base Yeovilton for some time and were in various states of repair, although most claimed to be flyable. Tasmanian Rob Edginton was at the auction and by the time the day was over two of the “Chippys” were his, WD374 and WK634. By January both were packed into a container and heading for Launceston. WD374 had been with the Royal Navy since 1951, was last flown on March 29 1994 and was thought to be in fairly good shape. However on inspection at Launceston it was found that a bolt from the oil pump had worked itself loose and found its way into the innards of the engine. This necessitated an engine rebuild and while this was being carried out a new propeller was obtained from England. Rob expects WD374 to be back in the air by Christmas flying as BSR and WK634 to follow very shortly after. Rob’s other love, Jet Provost JPP, is also due to fly again soon since a replacement engine has been obtained from the UK.
