Sydney's Westpac Lifesaver's new hangar facilities were opened in early August by NSW Premier Bob Carr. The hangar was constructed from materials donated by local businesses and sponsors and features an indoor rockclimbing wall for training purposes while a rescue winch will also soon be fitted above a small opening in the climbing wall, simulating the helicopter door. Nh 90 Rolls Out
The NH Industries NH 90 nine tonne class multirole helicopter rolled out on September 29 at a ceremony at Eurocopter France’s Marignane facility. Five NH 90 prototypes are currently being built, three to baseline standard by Eurocopter France, one to the TTH tactical transport version by Eurocopter Deutschland and one by Agusta to NFH naval configuration. The first prototype is due to make its first flight by year’s end. The NH 90 is being designed and built in collaboration by Eurocopter France, Agusta, Eurocopter Deutschland and Fokker. The naval version will be capable of ASW, anti surface warfare, SAR, vertrep and utility work, and is being built for France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The land based TTH tactical transport version is being built for France, Germany and Italy.
T800s For Lynx?
Westland is looking at fitting the Lynx with LHTEC T800 turboshafts, and such a configured helicopter could be offered to meet the RAN’s frigate helicopter requirement. It now seems likely that Westland will develop a mid life upgrade for the Lynx, including adding the T800s, rather than developing an all new helicopter in the same class. Apart from the engines, Westland has also spoken with its major subcontractors BAe and GEC with a view to upgrading other components of the helicopter. The T800 powered Lynx could prove well suited to the RAN as it would have greater hot and high and improved overall performance when compared with the standard Rolls-Royce Gem powered aircraft. The T800 would also be less expensive to maintain and more fuel efficient. The T800 was developed by LHTEC, a teaming of AlliedSignal and Allison. It powers the RAH-66 Comanche.
