Air NZ/Ansett Talks Back On

News Corporation Chairman Ken Cowley has announced that talks with Air New Zealand over the sale of News’ share of Ansett would be reopened. The original negotiations between News and Air New Zealand fell through in July over the issues of price and international traffic rights. At the time News made a commitment to the future of Ansett Australia and is now looking at divesting only some of its 50% share of Ansett.

Ansett New Zealand’s Operating Profit

Ansett New Zealand has posted is first operating profit since it began operations in New Zealand in 1987. Ansett New Zealand has reported a $NZ2.6m operating profit for the year ending June 30 1995. The result was a $NZ13m improvement on the 1993/94 result when the airline made a loss of $NZ10.4m, while this year’s profit was a $NZ50m improvement over the 1992/93 loss. Commenting on the profit Ansett New Zealand Chief Executive Rick Ellis noted “with revenues approaching a quarter of a billion dollars and total passenger numbers approaching two million, the company has achieved sufficient market share to be considered a long term competitive force in the New Zealand domestic air travel industry.” In other Ansett news the airline has finalised long term leases with Bombardier to replace Dash 8s ZK-NEV and NEW which have been on short term leases from Queensland based Flight West. The two new Dash 8s will enter service by year’s end, following their configuration to Ansett New Zealand specifications. The two aircraft were formerly operated by Taiwan’s Great China Airlines, and will be registered ZK-NET and NEU and are ironically being refurbished by Qantas at their Eastern Australia Tamworth base.
