Air Safety — Vital Actions
Vital Actions — They’re Just That!
A private pilot tells how rushed pre-takeoff checks almost became his undoing.
With some 250 hours’ experience as an unrestricted private pilot, spread over four years, I had become reasonably confident of my ability to fly safely and well. Even so, I still held a profound respect for all that my instructors had sought to hammer into me during my aeroclub training, and all in all, I considered myself a responsible and careful pilot. Complacency was certainly the last word I would have chosen to describe my attitude to flying. But an incident in which I played a part recently rudely shattered this illusion. It also taught me a lesson that I don’t think I’ll forget in a hurry. I confess it now for readers of Australian Aviation in the hope that other pilots might benefit from it — and be spared the consequences of what could so easily have become a disaster, but for the intervention of what I can only call luck!
