Peter Drucker, an astute observer with a wide ranging mind, said this of economists: “There is no greater obstacle to learning than to be the prisoner of totally invalid but dogmatic theories”.

He might have added that this is exhibited in an entrenched, elitist attitude which obstinately presumes that the indiscriminate application of economic theory alone is a cure-all for everything that ails not only the market place, but much of society besides.

This mindset ignores the complexities of the real world and hence, the valid claims of other disciplines to participate in prescribing solutions for society’s problems.
