Air Safety
Two Of A Kind
David Henderson of Henderson Air Charter stepped down off the box he’d been standing on to unfasten the port engine cowling of the Drover, and went to answer the telephone in his tiny hangar office.
The old Drover had seen better days, but for the scenic charters David was running from his base at Tullaberga in East Gippsland, it seemed ideal- if a bit expensive to operate.
David, chief and only pilot, as well as sole proprietor of Henderson Air Charter, had picked up the Drover for what seemed a ridiculous price from an aircraft broker at Bankstown. Several years and owners before that it had been a Flying Doctor aircraft operating in northern Queensland. But like most aeroplanes too old for their original function yet not old or rare enough to be prized by enthusiasts, the Drover had fallen on progressively harder times.
