Comanche Maximum Overkill

My interest was raised as soon as I picked up the strangely shaped box.

“One minute learning curve!” it proclaimed. Being used to spending several hours “converting onto a new flight simulator, I wondered if it would be possible to be flying within a minute of starting the programme, and if it is possible, would the simulator retain my interest for several hours? Well, it is possible and it did.

As an ex fighter pilot, I like fighter simulations best, but I have about 40 hours on choppers that I acquired illegally when I was in 34 Squadron and several of my friends were getting up hours to go to Vietnam. In those days, supervision was a little more relaxed, and I used to “sand bag”, as the Iroquois requires at least two pilots to keep the centre of gravity within limits. We used to fly out to the training area east of Canberra where I would be illegally taught to fly the Iroquois by my friends who only had a few tens of hours on type. After a couple of years, I could hover half way well, and could get into even the most tricky training pads. All in all, it was great fun, and I have retained a soft spot for helicopters and their capabilities. So when I saw Comanche, I was interested to see how well it simulated helicopter flying, especially in a battlefield environment.
