GA Fights for Survival

A Secret Agenda for General Aviation?

Were the spate of “industry consultations” conducted by the CAA throughout Australia in February and March to explain proposals to recover the costs of the Safety Regulatory Function (refer p10 April 93 AA) the writing on the wall for the GA industry?

The meetings, for the most part called at short notice in various centres in all States, produced a profound sense of shock, particularly amongst smaller operators of charter services, flying schools and engineering workshops, who see little hope of remaining in business if the proposed CAA aviation regulatory charges are implemented.

Indeed, the sense of dismay at a major Queensland aviation centre almost overflowed into violence against the presiding CAA panel. In Launceston, the industry reaction was such that a representative group of operators, chief pilots, chief flying instructors and aviation managers resolved to seek legal advice on a proposal for Tasmania to conduct its own aviation administration, independently of the CAA.
