The Ro/Rolls-Royce Trent has successfully completed its cold start test programme. The series 700engine, which will be fitted to the A330, was frozen at well below -40° Celsius, before successfully being restarted within the 90 second time limit. Thus far 244 Trents have been ordered by six customers for the A330 and the 777, with 46% and 23% market shares respectively on these programmes. The Boeing aircraft will be fitted with the larger 800 series Trent, while the 700, pictured here in mockup form, features a distinctive flattened nacelle. (Ro/ls-Royce)

Boeing’s Improved 747-400:
To introduce a series of modifications to its 747-400 long range transport which will result in increased weights, improved payload/range and reduced drag and fuel burn. The upgrades could also form the basis of the planned stretched 747-X.
The first changes will be available on aircraft built from later this year and thei Performance Improvement Package (PIP) includes a longer chord dorsal fin fairing made from composites instead of aluminium, a fuel transfer system from the horizontal tail torsion box fuel cells which will keep fuel aft of the centre of gravity for longer, thus improving the aircraft’s trim, and the fitting of wing spoilers which are held more tightly down to prevent them floating’ up in the cruise and creating drag.
